The Art of Marjorie Sarnat

Welcome to the Art of Marjorie Sarnat

I grew up in an apartment building in the city of Chicago. From my earliest memories, I knew I was meant to be an artist. I had no trees, flowers, mountains, butterflies, oceans, or big skies to inspire me. But there was beauty all around me. I had distressed brick walls, rusty patches of metal, cement sidewalks, weathered wood, glimmering gravel, jagged cracks in dusty windows, and the patterns created by rows of windows in large buildings.

Today I showcase the exciting interplay of colors, textures, and patterns from my experiences in all of my art. Each small piece within my mixed media artworks is a painting within a painting, and all the surfaces work together to form a larger statement. My cat, owl, and horse subjects are blanketed with fantastic ornamentation, flowers, and swirls.

My artwork can be seen at the Judith Kaufman Gallery inside the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood where I am a permanent exhibiting artist. While you’re here on my website please see my galleries in the Art Galleries tab. Originals are available for purchase as indicated there. Fine art canvas giclées are available in the Shop for selected pieces, too. Thank you for taking the time to explore my art!

I truly love art of all kinds, which is evident in my lifelong body of work.

  • I invented my own mixed media collage technique seen in my "Hidden" artworks

  • My popular Kleo Kats, done in oils and acrylics, have some people believing they were painted by Gustav Klimt himself. It’s simply not true

  • With my design and illustration background, I have developed products based on my art with many manufacturers with sales worldwide

  • As a N.Y. Times bestselling author/illustrator of coloring books for adults, I have over 30 books published with millions sold

  • Teaching art, whether in a school setting or in my own workshops, is especially gratifying work for me

  • I offer beautiful reproductions of selected artworks as fine art canvas giclées in my Shop at reasonable prices with FREE shipping within the U.S.

“Every inch of a painting is important to me. I try to bring beauty and excitement to the surface areas of my paintings so the viewer will discover smaller painterly compositions within each piece — what I call paintings within paintings.”

“With my dimensional collage style, I create multi-layered surfaces on canvas to showcase the interactions between colors and textures. Metallic accents complement figurative images of my own, words, bits of found objects, and other motifs culled from my collection of antique books. I evaluate each for its color, texture, and symbolic meaning and use these details to impressionistically to form my compositions.”

Crowdsourcing is from my Hidden Treasures series.

POETS & WARRIORS – MIXED MEDIA, 12 IN X 12 IN, SOLD

On January 18, 2024 I was mounting a new art show at the Judith Kaufman Gallery where I exhibit throughout the year. Before I could hang this piece it was bought right out of my hands! That was exciting and it doesn't happen every day.

This message by Eleanor Roosevelt inspired me to create Poets & Warriors. “Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History” is as true today as it was in her day. I juxtaposed traditional ladylike motifs with messages of power to say that although we women may appear ladylike, never underestimate our strength. Additional quotes in “Poets and Warriors” are by Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Reddy, and other feminists. Coming soon: prints on canvas.
